Tekken 5 (鉄拳5?) is the 5th canonical installment, and 6th main installment, in the popular Tekken series. It also marks the tenth anniversary of the series. It was first released for the arcades in 2004 running on the Namco System 256 arcade board and later ported to PlayStation 2 in North America on February 24, 2005, with the Japanese and European releases following in March 31 and June 24, 2005, respectively, which added the Ghost feature. The game removes several major gameplay changes introduced in the previous game, including uneven stage terrain, in favor of a faster gameplay akin to the older games in the series. It is also the first game in the series to feature the ability to customize characters with accessories, clothing, and other aesthetic items purchased with in-game currency. The game was upgraded to Tekken 5.1, which had mostly balance changes to the gameplay, and later Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, which added new characters, features, and customizations in addition to gameplay rebalancing. Tekken 5 was a major critical and commercial success, averaging 89.20% from GameRankings and 88/100 fromMetacritic, and has sold 6 million copies as of July 2009.
A sequel, Tekken 6 was released on 2007 in the arcades and later ported to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009.

Gameplay[edit]

Tekken 5 is credited with taking the series back to its roots. It incorporates a faster, more fluid fighting system, improved graphics, returning characters, and some of the Tekken series' trademark infinite stages. New to Tekken 5 is thecrush system which affects the vulnerability of a character while they attack. For example, a move with jumping properties, such as a hopkick, will be completely invulnerable during most of its animation time to all of an opponent's low attacks.
It also retains its wall juggling concept from Tekken 4, but the element is effectively less easy to abuse and easier to defend against. The home version is a collector's edition of sorts, as it includes the arcade versions of TekkenTekken 2Tekken 3 and StarBlade (as a hidden game). Tekken 5 also allowed players to customize their fighter for the first time, allowing them to change the colors of their outfits, buy additional costumes (only available to a few characters), and equip them with items by using money gained from playing the Story, Survival, Time Attack, the side-story Devil Within, and Arcade Battle modes.
Tekken 5 includes a beat 'em up minigame in direct lineage to the Tekken Force modes in Tekken 3 and Tekken 4 calledDevil Within. This minigame follows the adventures of Jin Kazama as he searches the G Corporation in search for information on his missing mother and other answers. Being somewhat story oriented, the player is not permitted to use their own choice of characters like previous iterations. The game also uses a limited button system, incorporating a Block and Jump button as well as sizing down the attack buttons to simple "Punch" and "Kick" buttons (though, some of Jin's fighting special moves can still be performed such as his Demon's Paw). Along with fighting various Jack models in the mini-game, the player must pursue minor key quests to proceed. This mode is one of the two ways to unlock the playable version of Jin's Devil incarnation, Devil Jin. As opposed to Tekken 4 where every character spoke either Japanese or English, the developers had some of the characters speak their native languages in Tekken 5Hwoarang and Baek were given Koreanvoices while Wang and Feng Wei were made to speak Mandarin. Ganryu, Heihachi, Kazuya, Yoshimitsu, Asuka, Jinpachi (non-playable character), Jin Kazama and his alter-ego Devil Jin retained their Japanese voices while Law, Paul, Marduk, Julia, Nina, Anna, Raven, Bruce, Bryan, Christie and Eddy speak English. Lee Chaolan and Ling Xiaoyu speak Japanese despite being ethnic Chinese. Steve Fox has his own British accent and Lei Wulong speaks American English with an occasional accent.
The raised and lowered sections of floors featured in the Tekken 4 levels were removed for the fifth installment. This change made gameplay throughout each stage generally similar, aside from wall placements. In addition to removing the uneven nature of the Tekken 4 styled stages, the design team returned to the style of stages from previous games by having some stages without barriers by allowing them to be infinitely scrolling. For walled stages, the fights take place in fairly symmetrical boxes without any uneven walls (again, removing a feature introduced in Tekken 4). Floors could also crack after one of the characters hit it hard enough. Only one part of a stage can be cracked at a time, however.
Other changes over the Tekken 4 design included the removal of the positional change techniques (throws were once again controlled by combinations of LP+LK or RP+RK instead of designating LP+LK as a position switch maneuver; only Steve Fox was given a position change attack), bringing back traditional air combat (Tekken 4 removed back and vertical leaps in favor of a more fluid 3D combat model) and using a juggle system more akin to Tekken 3 as opposed to the 4th game's less juggle-friendly gameplay. The fighters were also forced to remain stationary prior to the round beginning (Tekken 4 allowed the fighters to move freely before the opening of a round, fitting in with the more position-based gameplay of that game).
The single biggest change is 'Devil Within' mode. This is the fourth installment in the 'Tekken Force' series (the first 2 installments can be found in Tekken 3 and Tekken 4 respectively. The third installment was released as the Tekken spin-off game Death by Degrees). Similar to Death by Degrees, 'Devil Within' focuses solely on one playable character, Jin Kazama. This is a traditional platform game in which players must guide Jin through a series of labyrinth style levels and entire enemy armies. This mode features bosses, such as True Ogre (from Tekken 3), who is not playable in Tekken 5.
The opening loading screen features a few seconds from a video game based on an early 3-D Namco space flyerStarBlade. Like with Galaga in the PlayStation version of the original Tekken, players can control the space ship in the demo. Pressing START prompts Tekken 5 to load. However, this game can be unlocked for full play in Arcade History mode. In addition, players can also play the Arcade versions of the first 3 Tekken games. Each game comes with an option to use only the default characters, or use the bosses and sub-bosses too. Console only characters are not featured.

Plot[edit]

Mere moments after Jin Kazama's departure from the Hon-Maru dojo, military helicopters approach and begin deployingJack-4s pods into the building. Heihachi Mishima and his son, Kazuya, are awaken to a squadron bursting through the walls. At first, the two battle the Jacks together as father and son. However, Kazuya eventually betrays Heihachi by throwing him into a group of the androids and escapes. The Jacks hold down Heihachi while one activates its detonator, creating a huge explosion as Hon-Maru goes up in flames. The only witness to the event is Raven, a mysterious agent clad in black, who relays to his command the death of Heihachi and destroys a Jack-4 coming for him while leaving. Heihachi, while managing to survive, is rendered in a coma, and the following day, Heihachi's supposed death is declared all over the world with everyone foreseeing the end of the Mishima Zaibatsu. However, someone else has already taken over the company and business continues as usual. Two months later, the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 is announced. Meanwhile, Jin is plagued by nightmares triggered by his Devil gene and tries to end it by entering the tournament. His father, Kazuya deduces that the Jack-4s are sent by G Corporation to assassinate him and decides to enter the tournament so he would be able to take revenge against whoever had sent them.
The secret sponsor of the tournament and owner of the Mishima Zaibatsu is finally revealed to be Jinpachi Mishima, the father of Heihachi who was confined below Hon-Maru by Heihachi after a coup d'état thirty years ago. However, he was possessed by the Devil entity who granted him insurmountable power, after which he broke out of Hon-Maru during the Jacks attacks. Jinpachi, in the last act of morality, announces the tournament in the hope that someone is able to kill him before his potential reign of terror starts. Eventually Jin makes it to the final round and faces his Devil-infused great-grandfather in combat. Ultimately, Jin manages to defeat Jinpachi, who dissolves into dust and disappears shortly after, with his wish being fulfilled. Jin, after defeating him, becomes the new head of Mishima Zaibatsu.

Characters[edit]

The game features a total of 32 playable characters. Most characters from Tekken 4 are returning, including Bryan Fury,Christie MonteiroCraig MardukEddy GordoHeihachi MishimaHwoarangJin KazamaJulia ChangKazuya MishimaKing IIKuma IILee ChaolanLei WulongLing XiaoyuMarshall LawNina WilliamsPandaPaul PhoenixSteve Fox, andYoshimitsu. Like its predecessor, the game also sees the return of several characters from earlier games (mostly fromTekken 2) that previously were cut from the canon series, including Anna WilliamsBaek Doo SanBruce IrvinGanryu, andWang Jinrei.
In addition to returning characters, the game introduces 7 new characters, 6 of which are playable: Asuka Kazama, a hot-blooded high school student practicing Kazama Style Traditional Martial Arts who enters the tournament to take revenge against Feng Wei for having injured her father and destroyed her family's dojo, Feng Wei, an arrogant prodigy of the God Fist style who searches through Japan for information about the scrolls of God Fist, Jack-5, the fifth model of Jack series again sent by his creator, Jane to retrieve Jack-2's memories from Mishima Zaibatsu, Raven, a mysterious ninja agent who is the first to report Heihachi Mishima's supposed demise, Roger Jr., the wife-and-son duo of boxing kangaroo Roger set out to rescue their husband/father from Mishima Zaibatsu, Devil Jin, the Devil form of Jin who uses Jin's old move set composed of his parents' martial arts and also serves as the Stage 8 sub-boss, and Jinpachi Mishima, the father of Heihachi who is resurrected from the dead by the Devil Gene and serves as the unplayable final boss of Arcade mode.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 (previously known as Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2: Fusion), a sequel to the 2006 action role-playing video game Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, was released September 15, 2009. The game was jointly developed by Vicarious Visions (PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360), n-Space(Nintendo DSPlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii) and Savage Entertainment(PlayStation Portable), and is published by Activision. The game features characters from the Marvel Comics universe and follows elements of the Secret War and Civil War story arcs.
The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 were generally well received, averaging above 70% at aggregators GameRankingsand Metacritic. The Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable fared much poorer, averaging between 45% and 65% for their respective platforms.

Gameplay[edit]

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 borrows much of its gameplay from its predecessor. The game allows players to select a team of four given characters from a larger pool of heroes and villains; team members are interchangeable and may be swapped during gameplay. General gameplay mechanics are similar to those of the X-Men Legends series. The game is played from an isometric dungeon crawl perspective, supporting up to four players simultaneously. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game also feature online play via the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, respectively.
The power system also has been improved, allowing two characters to combine powers, yielding a new attack, known as a "fusion".[5] Each playable character in the game has a unique fusion with every other playable character in the game. An example is Captain America using his shield to reflect Storm's lightning bolts. Players have the ability to level up characters and earn new abilities and powers. The PS3 and 360 versions feature an updated character progression system, with each character having four core powers that evolve as the character levels up. The Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable versions of the game resemble the character progression system found in the original Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.

Synopsis[edit]

Heroes Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, and Luke Cage battle enemy robots.
A trailer released at E3 shows a military operation originating in Latveria, home of master villain Doctor Doom.[6] "The story starts with Secret War.[7] We're using Nick Fury's invasion of Latveria as a jumping off point. The rest of the story is derived from the consequences of those actions," states Dan Tanguay, creative director for Vicarious Visions.[8]
The game then follows the Civil War story arc: a fight between heroes and villains causes an explosion in Stamford, Connecticut, killing 612 civilians (including a number of school children). The government labels the incident "super powered negligence", and the public demand a Superhuman Registration Act.[9] The government passes the act, and all meta-humans are forced to adhere to or disobey the law. In the game, players are able to choose between the Pro-Registration side, headed by Iron Man and Mister Fantastic, or the Anti-Registration side, headed by Captain America and Luke Cage. Several other characters are 'locked' into a specific side.
Songbird is locked to the Pro-Registration side for the PS3 and 360 versions, with Ms. Marvel and Thor locked to the Pro-Registration side for the PS2, PSP and Wii versions. Iron Fist is locked to the Anti-Registration side for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, with Daredevil and Storm locked to the Anti-Registration side for the PS2, PSP and Wii versions. These ten characters are locked into their specific side, but the others are playable on either side of the conflict. Multiple endings are available, and are determined by the side chosen at the beginning of the game.[10] Tanguay stated that the story follows into the aftermath of the Civil War.[11]

Plot[edit]

The game begins one year prior to the main Civil War story arc. Colonel Nick Fury is leading a team comprising Captain AmericaIron ManSpider-Man, and Wolverine, in addition to several other superheroes, on an unsanctioned attack on Castle Doom in Latveria after discovering that the elected prime minister Lucia von Bardas was supplying weapons to theTinkerer who in turn supplies them to super villains. The President is adamant against the attack as Von Bardas has been establishing friendly ties with them. The attack is successful and Castle Doom is reduced to rubble, with Von Bardas assumed dead.
The scene then shifts to present day. Ms. Marvel is reported missing after being sent to recover intel on suspicious criminal activity. A team is sent to investigate and find her being interrogated by Shocker. They then uncover a plot by the Latverian military, led by a cyborg Von Bardas and several subordinate supervillains, to destroy New York City. The group thwarts Von Bardas' plan, but many city blocks are destroyed in the process, prompting the government to consider the Superhuman Registration Act (or SRA for short). In light of this incident, Nick Fury disappears, leaving S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill in charge.
Three days later during a telecast of The New WarriorsNitro creates a large explosion, killing more than 600 civilians in the process, prompting the immediate implementation of the Superhuman Registration Act. Captain America, opposed to the act, goes underground, along with several other superheroes and S.H.I.E.L.D agents (who have formed a group called "The White Star"). At this point, the story branches into two segments; Anti-Registration and Pro-Registration, depending on player choice. In order to aid them, the Pro-Registration group develops nanite technology to use as mind control on the super villains, increasing their ranks.
The two story arcs converge when Iron Man fakes a hostage situation at a chemical plant owned by Stark Industries. There, he attempts to negotiate with Captain America, promising amnesty. Captain America refuses and a battle ensues between the two factions. The nanite-controlled super villains go haywire and attack the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents they were programmed to help, stealing explosives to destroy the facility. Fury, disguised as one of the agents, enlists the help of the group to fend offVenom III and Green Goblin while he disarms the bombs. He is thwarted by Venom as he tries to disarm the final one. The ensuing explosion wounds many superheroes whom Fury rescues. The group learns that the Fury they saw was one of his androids. He manages to acquire Tinkerer's help in discovering the cause of the malfunction.
The group is then sent to Prison 42 in the Negative Zone where the rebel superheroes and supervillains that have been captured are held, to get a sample of the nanite formula. They collect the samples and Fury activates the self-destruct system to prevent the spread of nanites. Most of the superheroes involved escape, but Fury's fate is unknown. The team learns the nanites survived and have now spread worldwide. As a result, the Superhuman Registration Act is suspended, uniting the two teams. They split into different groups, with the main group traveling to Wakanda, home of Black Panther. They help him defend the country from nanite agents, now under the moniker of "The Fold", and in the process cure Venom and Green Goblin of the nanites. They also discover that Nick Fury has been taken by The Fold. The heroes establish a base in Wakanda, learning that The Fold cannot comprehend Fury's intel on it, making it temporarily safe from nanite attacks. In order to stop The Fold, the heroes infiltrate a base in Iceland to broadcast a nanite stasis signal that will paralyze those in its control, allowing them to be cured. At the culmination of their mission, the team face off against Tinkerer, who was behind The Fold all along, and then a nanite-controlled Nick Fury enhanced with extra nanites. After defeating Fury, every one who was affected is freed from the nanites.
The game has one of two news-based endings depending on which side the player has chosen:
  • In the Pro-Registration ending, the Superhuman Registration Act gets amended where the superheroes can voluntarily register without revealing their secret identities while Tony Stark becomes Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • In the Anti-Registration ending, the Superhuman Registration Act gets repealed with the President granting full amnesty to all Anti-Registration heroes.
Also in both endings, a banner running across the screen states that the President has pardoned Nick Fury.

Characters[edit]

Vicarious Visions redesigned many characters, taking cues from their comic designs and adjusting their costumes to fit the game's design.[12]
The game includes some format-specific characters,[13] and the developers plan to release additional characters as downloadable content.[14] In addition, each character on the PS3 and Xbox 360 has one alternate costume that can be unlocked during the course of the game.[15] Stan Lee, co-creator of Marvel Comics and creator of many of the characters, also lends his likeness and voice to New York senator Lieber; this marks the first time Stan has made a physical cameo in a video game.[16] On April 1, 2009, Aunt May was announced to be a playable character on the official website, as part of an April Fool's joke.[17]
Several playable characters also appear as boss battles throughout the game, such as battling Iron Man if the player chooses the Anti-Registration path, or facing Captain America on the Pro-Registration path. Other playables are unlocked by defeating them, such as Deadpool, Green Goblin and Venom. Juggernaut was available as a pre-order bonus incentive for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.[18][19][20] A patch was released to allow those who do not have Juggernaut installed to play with others who have the character On October 9, 2009, downloadable content was announced for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, which includes new characters and comic missions[21] as well as new achievements.[22] It was released on November 5, 2009 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.[23] Additionally the once pre-order exclusive character Juggernaut was available for $1.99/160MSP.[23] The content was removed on from both networks December 31, 2009, with Activision claiming the content was "a limited time offer".[24] On July 1, 2010 Activision re-released the DLC on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network shortly thereafter, at Xbox Live were released on July 3, 2010 and at PlayStation Network were released on July 20, 2010. Players could purchase both the five character DLC pack and the Juggernaut pre-order character for the same cost previously mentioned. Activision, however, stipulated that the content would only be available until December 31, 2010.[25] The expansion packs returned to the PlayStation Network (at least in Europe) some time in January 2012, but have not been added back to Xbox Live. In January 2014, the packs were removed once again from PlayStation Network.
